Brokkr's Software Criteria
The law the forge builds by — what the dwarfs will, and won't, build on.
Build to the metal
- Baremetal — not on a VM or an interpreter. Rust · C++ · C · Zig — or near-metal Golang / Haskell.
- Single or minimal dependencies — the fewer, the merrier.
- Superb functionality, shown by zero-copy · multi-core · SIMD.
This means
NO
- No Java / Ruby / JS / Python / Perl — except as language bindings (callable from).
- No, or minimal, dependency on Kubernetes or on OS distribution / package managers and their tooling.
- No lock-in to a particular OS, Kubernetes, or cloud provider's functionality. (Bizarre that this needs saying — but such was the reality around 2022.)
YES
- Yes — depend on widely accessible hardware (Intel / AMD CPUs).
- Yes, please — lean into the best upcoming hardware (NVMe, …).
In Norse mythology, Brokkr (Old Norse: [ˈbrokːz̠], "the one who works with metal fragments") is the dwarf who, with his brother Sindri (Eitri), forged the gods' greatest treasures — Mjölnir among them.
